I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with a new colleague to discuss my journey with dyslexia and ADHD. Our conversation was incredibly positive and insightful as we explored how these conditions shape my personal and professional life.
One of the first things I shared was how much I love my brain. It has the incredible ability to hyperfocus on data and see the bigger picture, while my observational skills and impulsivity help me connect with people on a deep, individual level.
Of course, we also talked about the challenges. Some tasks require significantly more brain power for me, like task management and time planning due to my time blindness. But I’ve developed techniques to thrive, such as the Pomodoro method (a lifesaver!), and using AI tools like ChatGPT and CoPilot in 365 to keep me on track and double-check my work.
I used to just live with my ADHD and dyslexia, but now I thrive with them. I know my worth and celebrate the unique way my brain works. Embracing these differences has made me a stronger and more dynamic professional.
Here are three things you might not know about ADHD:
Women with ADHD are often underdiagnosed because their symptoms can be less obvious and more internalised compared to men. This can lead to years of struggling without understanding why.
Time blindness is a common struggle. This means having difficulty sensing the passage of time, which can affect everything from meeting deadlines to managing daily schedules.
Hyperfocus is a double-edged sword. While it allows individuals with ADHD to dive deeply into tasks they are passionate about, it can also make shifting attention to other necessary tasks more challenging.
Let's continue to celebrate neurodiversity and support each other in our professional journeys!
